WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, POLITICAL SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND LAW STUDIES
|
|
|
|
Famous Women in the Law – Supreme Court Justices
No woman served as a Supreme Court Justice from the Court’s beginning in 1790 until almost 200 years later. In 1981, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, nominated by President Reagan, became the first woman to serve on the Court. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the second woman to serve, was nominated in 1993 by President Clinton.
Today, four of the nine sitting Justices are women: Sonia Sotomayor (first Latina), nominated in 2009 by President Obama; Elena Kagan, nominated in 2010 by President Obama; Amy Coney Barrett, nominated in 2020 by President Trump; and Ketanji Brown Jackson (first Black woman), nominated in 2022 by President Biden. Of the 116 people who have served as Justices throughout the Court’s history, only six have been women.

A Great Customer Service Nomination for February honoring Kyle Dewalt was received from Tina Petrovic of the Department of Languages and Literatures:
Kyle Dewalt, Coordinator of the Center for Teaching & Learning at Delaware State University, is being recognized for his outstanding commitment to customer service and his exceptional support of our faculty.
|

Kyle consistently demonstrates a level of professionalism, responsiveness and care that strengthens our academic community and greatly enhances the day‑to‑day experience of those he serves.
One of Kyle’s most notable strengths is his quick and reliable response to email inquiries. Faculty members know they can count on him for timely, accurate and thoughtful assistance, no matter how big or small the request may be. His responsiveness alone sets a high standard for service, but it is only one part of what makes him such an invaluable colleague.
Kyle is also deeply committed to one‑on‑one support, meeting individually with faculty members to ensure they feel confident and well‑equipped in their work. He approaches every interaction with patience, kindness and genuine respect, creating an environment where faculty feel comfortable asking questions and exploring new tools or ideas.
In addition, Kyle works tirelessly to design and deliver workshops on a wide range of topics, all of which help faculty stay informed, prepared and empowered. His sessions are consistently well‑organized, relevant and accessible, reflecting both his expertise and his dedication to meeting the evolving needs of our campus.
Kyle’s commitment to staying current with emerging technologies is another hallmark of his service. He actively seeks out new tools, trends and innovations, and he generously shares this knowledge with faculty to support their teaching, research and productivity. His proactive approach ensures that our community remains forward‑thinking and well‑supported.
Above all, Kyle embodies the very best of customer service. He is kind, helpful, respectful and unfailingly professional. His willingness to go above and beyond—combined with his strong work ethic and genuine care for others—makes a meaningful difference every day.
For these reasons and many more, I am pleased to recognize Kyle Dewalt, Coordinator of the Center for Teaching & Learning at Delaware State University, for his exceptional service and his unwavering dedication to supporting our faculty.
