EARTH MONTH MESSAGE FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY, POLITICAL SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND LAW STUDIES
Before 1962, chemicals like DDT were seen as "miracle" tools. Rachel Carson’s book, Silent Spring, changed this by explaining how poisoning nature eventually harms humans. She wasn't just a scientist; she was a gifted writer who showed us that nature is a "web," and if you poison one part, the poison eventually makes its way back to us.
Despite corporate backlash, her work led to the creation of the EPA and a national ban on DDT. Carson transformed environmentalism into a powerful movement, proving one person with a pen can actually change the world.
